How to accredit a GreenPower Generator

GreenPower comes only from accredited generators that meet strict environmental standards, so consumers can be confident they are purchasing genuinely ‘green’ electricity.

All GreenPower Products offered by GreenPower Providers must come from accredited renewable energy generators. To be accredited by GreenPower, electricity generators must meet multiple criteria, including that they must:

  • create Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs)

  • have been commissioned or first sold energy after 1 January 1997

  • help to reduce the overall level of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the electricity sector

  • be of net benefit to the environment.

GreenPower considers all aspects of Ecological Sustainable Development in the accreditation process to determine whether the generator creates a net benefit to the environment on a local, regional and national scale.

Renewable electricity generation types

There are many technologies to generate electricity from renewable sources. The predominant technologies that are currently accredited under GreenPower are:

  • Solar farms using solar photovoltaic systems

  • Wind farms using different numbers and sizes of wind turbines

  • Hydro-electric power stations

  • Biomass and landfill gas-fuelled power stations.

GreenPower Providers must ensure that all LGCs to be used in their GreenPower products come from a GreenPower Generator.

Steps for GreenPower Generator accreditation:

  1. Download the generator application form

  2. Using the GreenPower Program Rules as a guide, complete the application form and attach supplementary documentation

  3. The application is assessed by the Program Manager and approved by the National GreenPower Steering Group

  4. If approved, sign the generator Schedule outlining the terms and conditions of accreditation. This completes the accreditation process.

  5. The date of accreditation for a generator will be the date we receive the initial application or the Clean Energy Regulator accreditation date (whichever is the later date). To make sure your generator is GreenPower accredited from day one we suggest you submit your initial GreenPower application before receiving Clean Energy Regulator accreditation.

  6. Once accredited, the GreenPower Generator's Large-scale Generation Certificates can be used in GreenPower products.
