Located on Sydney’s southeast coast, the Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant has an annual capacity of approximately 95 terajoules of biomethane, which it injects into the New South Wales gas network. Jemena developed the project in partnership with Sydney Water and with support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). It upgrades biogas produced from wastewater at the Malabar Water Resource Recovery Facility into mains-grade biomethane.
At Malabar, organic waste within the wastewater stream is treated through anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down material to produce biogas. This biogas is then upgraded by removing contaminants to meet gas network specifications, allowing safe injection into the existing distribution network. By converting wastewater-derived biogas into renewable gas and utilising existing infrastructure, the project reduces waste and supports the transition toward lower-emissions energy systems.

Located in Salisbury, South Australia, the SA1 Salisbury Bioenergy facility has an annual capacity of approximately 180,000 gigajoules of biomethane, which will inject into the local gas network. First gas grid injection is expected in Q4 CY2026. Delorean Corporation Ltd is developing the project, with funding support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as part of ARENA's National Industrial Transformation Program. It will produce mains-grade biomethane as well as biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) from processed commercial and industrial food waste streams.
At SA1, organic waste is treated through anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down materials to produce biogas. This biogas is then upgraded to biomethane suitable for injection into the South Australian gas network. By-products such as biogenic CO₂ and digestate are captured for beneficial reuse. By diverting waste from landfill and displacing fossil-based natural gas, the project supports emissions reduction and the transition toward low-emission renewable gas.
